"Serenade to Sweden"

Ellington '04

An area dedicated to the International Duke Ellington Study Group Conference held in Stockholm, Sweden, during May 2004.

More than a jazz festival, this "as annual as possible" event started as a small meeting of friends in 1981 and brings together many scholars, musicians and associates in Ellingtonia for seminars, discussion and performance. Previous Conferences have been in Chicago (thrice, including the initial 1981 get-together), Washington (thrice), Oldham (twice), Newark, Toronto (twice), Ottawa, Los Angeles (twice), Copenhagen, New York, Stockholm (1994), Pittsburgh and Leeds. 2004 was the 19th International Conference.

Among many giving presentations to an audience of around 160 delegates were Annie Kuebler (Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University), Patricia Willard (research historian, ex. Ellington organisation), George Avakian (Ellington record producer), and Steven Lasker (very active record collector & transfer specialist).

Musicians Alice Babs (vocalist with Ellington in his Sacred Music) and Nils Lindberg (pianist, composer, bandleader) were involved in a panel discussion on working with Ellington, and played together in two concerts.

Below is an initial page of a few of my photos from the concert at Nalen on Friday night, May 14th. Alice Babs sings with Nils Lindberg and Hammond organist Kjell Öhman. More pictures will follow...
