Ellington's Sacred Music

[ 1 | > ]

On Monday May 24th 2004, coincidently the 30th anniversary of Ellington's death, I had the great pleasure of attending Blackheath Halls in Greenwich, South London, to hear the Trinity College of Music Jazz Faculty Big Band and Choir led by Issie Barratt in a programme of Duke Ellington's Sacred Music, with Anton Brown (voice) and Will Gaines (tap).

The Ellington came in the second half (really, I feel he should have worked harder, that there might have been enough of his music to fill an entire evening!)... During the first part of the first half, the Big Band was directed by Anton Brown and featured himself and fellow singers Helen Sutcliffe and Kate Mullins, who would later form part of the Choir, in various standards, including Night Train. To finish the first half, saxophonist & tutor Mick Foster performed his own music in several student-based sextet formations.

Spread over these several pages are around 130 photographs I made during the evening...
